      <description>&lt;p&gt;I was at a 5 day Project NExT workshop. I heard from a lot of interesting people and learned a lot about teaching. The thing that stood out to me the most was just how different math researchers are from math educators. Math researchers mostly share a feeling of contempt toward people, people are just means of discovering math,  whereas math educators care only about people, math just happens to be thing they teach. I have not yet figured out which camp I fall in. Below are my raw notes from the five days.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

      <title>Calc1000</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;I just finished teaching the largest class I have taught so far.&#xA;It went as well as one would expect a class, that is held in the bleak Canadian fall nights for two hours straight twice a week with a student to faculty ratio of 200:1, to go.&lt;/p&gt;&#xA;&lt;ol&gt;&#xA;&lt;li&gt;&#xA;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Biweekly quizzes.&lt;/strong&gt; This was the one thing that worked really well. Frequent evaluation is the key to keeping students on schedule, especially freshmen. In the future, I am planning on having weekly, instead of biweekly, quizzes.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

      <title>Giving a Math Talk</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;I recently saw this &lt;a href=&#34;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nI65jgHG9o&#34;&gt;fun video&lt;/a&gt; about the tension between clarity and mystery and the role of this tension in creating good design. It made me think about giving a math talk.&#xA;I think the element of mystery is often neglected when one prepares a math class or just a math talk.&lt;/p&gt;&#xA;&lt;p&gt;It is understood that unlike, say, in fiction, mystery is undesirable in mathematics.&#xA;While it is good to have a bunch of unsolved problems to work on, we would very much like to know the answers to them.&#xA;All mathematicians are glad that we now know the proof of Fermat&amp;rsquo;s big conjecture and the Poincare conjecture, and most mathematicians would sell their soul to know the proofs of the Riemann hypothesis and solution to the Navier-Stokes.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

As if mirroring my inner self the ground is laden with snow today and there is no wind, a quiet calm pervades the city with a piercing whiteness that but absorbs all your thoughts and leaves you cleaner and in peace with your inner self, like a beautiful symphony fading into nothingness.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
